Dear AIA|LA members:
As architects, we bring leadership to the planning and design of the built environment. We are also an important part of the design and construction industry which contributes nearly one in nine dollars of the U.S. GDP.
The past year has been extremely challenging for architects living in Los Angeles. Many of us are questioning how we can improve our situation. One way is to influence public policy that will help improve our communities and our economy - by letting our voices be heard by government leaders.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is in the process of developing his fiscal year 2010-1011 budget plan for the City of Los Angeles. This plan will be brought to the Los Angeles City Council for consideration by April 20, 2010. As you are well aware, the City of Los Angeles is financially challenged and balancing the budget will be a difficult task. Earlier this month, the Mayor released a survey encouraging constituents to provide feedback on the types of services they feel are most important for the City to offer. By participating in the survey, one is invited to express their opinion on how to balance the City's budget - chosing which programs to cut and which ones to bolster.
As an architect, how would you balance the City of LA's budget?
Many of the issues being considered impact the built environment and the well being of our profession. One of these, for example, is whether or not to cancel or defer projects in the City’s 5-year Capital Improvement Program. This past fiscal year, nearly $230 million in General Fund dollars were used to support capital construction projects, bringing jobs to architects and needed improvements to our City.

The budget for the City of Los Angeles must be balanced in a manner that is fiscally responsible and that will ensure the long-term health and economic competitiveness of the region and its inhabitants. As a member of AIA Los Angeles, I encourage you to participate in this survey and to demonstrate the importance of continuing to improve our built environment and the vitality of the design and construction industry. Let your voice be heard.
