FULFILL YOUR MANDATORY ACCESSIBILITY COURSE REQUIREMENTS ONLINE WITH AIA IN CALIFORNIA!
In September, 2008, the State of California signed SB 1608 into law. SB 1608 creates a mandatory continuing education (MCE) requirement on disability access for California architects as a condition of licensure.
AIA Los Angeles now has workshops to fulfill those requirements! These courses have been specifically designed for architects required by new California law to take continuing education coursework in disability access for license renewal.
Course #101 - Accessibility: Design and Disconnects
Presented by: Michael Chambers, FAIA, FCSI, CCS
Course Overview:
With conflicting and overlapping codes, guidelines, and legislation, correctly interpreting ADA standards remains on the number one issue in accessibility today. While the Department Of Justice has published a priority list for accessibility to facilitate the process, inconsistent interpretation compounded by a lack of construction tolerances can still lead to field compliance issues. Blame is often assigned to design professionals or to contractors, however, field studies suggests it is something more than that. During this one hour presentation on Universal Design Principles, explore a range of disconnects discovered during nearly 3 years of accessibility surveys in California. The lessons learned will enable design professionals to take a holistic approach to accessibility and as well as develop a rational interpretation and assessment protocol that can be used in the field
This course qualifies for one (1) hour of approved AIA continuing education credit and complies with California licensure requirements regarding accessibility (SB 1608 requirement).
Fee: $25 for AIA members/$40 non-members

Course #102 - Accessibility: Case Histories
Presented by: Michael Chambers, FAIA, FCSI, CCS
Course Overview:
This course is a series of visual case histories organized around the Department of Justice’s Severity Codes: DOJ 1 – Exterior; DOJ 2 – Interior; DOJ 3 – Toilet Rooms; and DOJ 4 – Accessories. These case histories are excerpted from over 3-years of accessibility surveys, plan and specification reviews, and extensive quality control exercises in various California architectural firms. Using real world examples that exemplify the most common disconnects between design and construction, design professionals will be able to see strategies and solutions for ensuring accessible spaces beyond the drawing board.
This course qualifies for one and a half (1 1/2) hours of approved AIA continuing education credit and complies with California licensure requirements regarding accessibility (SB 1608 requirement)
Fee: $40 for AIA members/$60 non-members
