AIA|LA & LAUSD: Working Together to Build Better Communities
Make your voice heard with LAUSD and the Los Angeles Department of City Planning by becoming involved in one of two pilot programs launching right now.
AIA|LA is currently building a task-force of local architects and urban designers who will provide critical insight and feedback to public agencies through one of two pilot programs launching in August 2010. The goal of both of these programs is to give architects the opportunity to serve their community and help shape the dialogue around such issues as: contracting reform; the selection process; masterplanning initiatives; design competitions; project delivery methods; peer-review & design review sessions.
These volunteer programs are in partnership with LAUSD and the Los Angeles City Planning Commission. Participants will be asked to attend a meeting and engage in discussions aimed to achieve higher standards in city planning.
If you are passionate about raising the urban design bar in Los Angeles then please contact Will Wright to find out how you can be involved.
More information regarding each program can be found below:
Are you available on Monday, August 9 (8am - 10am) to attend the first in series of monthly meetings with LAUSD senior planning and facility management staff?
AIA|LA will build a task-force of twelve to twenty architects passionate about working with the Chapter and with LAUSD, and coordinate to have five to seven architects participate at each monthly discussion, utilizing a flexible/open rotation of perspectives to share ideas on how to best work together to build better communities.
The objectives of these monthly meeting with LAUSD will involve the following evolving agenda items:
a. Contracting Reform - What are areas of improvement that could help our AE community in this time of stress?
b. The Architect Selection Process - Are there means and methods that would both increase participation and transparency?
c. Masterplanning Initiatives - What is LAUSD doing to ensure the best Master Plans for its next phase of work?
d. Design Review Advisory Panels - How can we engage the AE community to provide expert advice on the process of and the quality of school designs?
e. The Master Architect proposal - How can we return, even on a limited basis to a single entity that will design, manage and construct schools projects?
f. Project Delivery Methods - A hearty discussion on the impact of 17406 vs. 17250 (Lease back vs. Design Build)
Although we expect to program monthly meetings, we expect the objectives of each meeting to evolve. Therefore, agenda topics will be clearly communicated in advance in effort to coordinate the most articulate architect advisors per session. Your leadership and involvement is much appreciated, and we look forward to further expanding opportunities to work together with LAUSD management.
The monthly meetings are scheduled to occur on the 9th of every month at 8am, 333 S. Beaudry Ave, 23rd Floor. You would not be expected to attend every meeting, of course. But rather - we'll rotate through a leadership pool on a revolving basis.
