The AFLA SALON FOR NEW VOICES is a forum for individuals & organizations whose unique visions deserve wider public consideration. This year we focus on the dual ideas of sustainability and social justice and its interplay in the fields of art & design.

RIVEROPOLIS, was founded by Gregory Gavin in 2005, as a company that designs, produces and deploys art rivers and play environments to schools and museums. In highly popular children’s workshops, Mr. Gavin introduces concepts of ecology, architecture and urban design in a dynamic “economy” of territory, tools, materials and ideas. Recently, he has migrated from community artist to industrial designer as he develops a line of lightweight, ergonomic art and play equipment intended for the education, museum and streetscape markets using fiberglass, metal and bent plywood. Mr. Gavin will be discussing the crisis of electronic mediation in the public commons and how his public projects reclaim art production as social and creative activity for children and adults. He will discuss how his work may contribute to an emerging “pattern language” for interactive environments. He will show existing river work along with drawings and models for a variety of proposed devices, studio furniture, vehicles and a flagship retail store / studio / cafe. Learn more about Gregory Gavin at www.riveropolis.com and www.gregorygavin.com.
