Ken Downing – Light Build Design

After starting a 25 year career as a residential designer for clients including the Getty & Shorenstein families, Ken’s interest in sustainability led to panelized construction followed by a decade in design dedicated to working with the first lighting manufacturer in the world to develop acoustic lighting. Now, at Light Build Design, Ken focuses efforts on assisting local designers working globally and he has judged the IES lighting awards three times. His commitment to healthcare and education is deeply personal. Currently serving as the AIA vice chair for Healthcare he advocates for evidence-based design, Well standards, and the newest lighting technologies available for low glare solutions with higher comfort.

Ellie Motevalian – Lighting Design Principal at P2S

Ellie Motevalian is a lighting design principal at P2S with over 15 years of experience in architectural and lighting design. Holding a Master’s degree in Architecture and Building Science, Ellie has a deep commitment to improving lighting solutions, particularly in healthcare environments. Her work has been recognized with several awards, reflecting a dedication to creating impactful and innovative designs. As a member of the IES and the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), Ellie actively engages in ongoing professional development and collaborative efforts to further the field of lighting design.

Salwa Osman – Los Angeles Studio Lead, WSP

Salwa has been working with light and space for over 25 years. With an architecturally trained eye Salwa uses light to express a ‘fourth dimensionality’ to spaces and she pairs that with technical skills that enable her to achieve the results desired. She approaches lighting design in a holistic manner that is sensitive to form, function, environment, energy performance, and budget while paying tribute to the architectural design. Her work has received many awards and recognition. In addition to commercial, cultural, hospitality and civic projects, Salwa delves deeply into healthcare so she is involved in the design of numerous local and national projects. As VP and Studio Lead at WSP she collaborates with clients to develop lighting design solutions and carries them through from concept to completion.

Guy Smith – Associate Principal, HLB

As a design leader Guy brings a seasoned and holistic perspective that translates into spectacular lighting experiences. Throughout his career of nearly 40 years Guy has spearheaded the design of numerous award-winning projects as both a licensed architect and a lighting designer. His breadth of experience and wealth of expertise is backed by a first class technical skill set and a sophisticated understanding of the finer points of design. Guy serves as an associate principal of HLB’s Los Angeles office and leader of firm wide initiatives for business development and expansion. He is a member of the AIA and certified through the National Council on Qualifications for Lighting Professionals NCQLP.
