Participants will learn about the history and development of the Venice, CA area and how this history has shaped the current urban form of the area. We will visit and discuss notable examples from architectural history – specifically the residential work of Frank Gehry from the 70s and 80s – and how the design and planning of those projects influenced architectural practice in Los Angeles. We will also explore various recreational spaces and public art projects and discuss the role of recreation amenities and public art in shaping the urban environment and community. Participants will also learn about current urban design issues relating to the development of housing and homelessness in Venice and the various political forces and initiatives (ED1) that shape design outcomes in this area.

Nate has lived and practiced in major cities throughout North America. “Because of the significant challenges cities now face today—climate change, homelessness, lack of affordability and the need to innovate, to name a few—city leaders are moving from simple ‘extractive’ to more complex, ‘regenerative’ models. Many are thinking much more about the interplay of built, natural, and demographic systems,” he says. “Developers have a significant role in leveraging capital improvements and making growth happen; but promoting biodiversity and improving the natural environment while giving stakeholders a voice through collective co-authorship are just as important.”
Since 1995, Nate’s work has included large redevelopment projects such as sports and entertainment, transit-oriented mixed use, innovation hubs, and airport-related developments. Nate’s services include project strategy, concept design, outreach and research.
Nate is a panelist and speaker at national conferences and universities and is a recognized thought leader on the nexus between strategy, design, and human behavior in cities. His efforts to create new models for urban design have been recognized with more than a hundred local, state, and national awards.
