There is no more invasive or disruptive activity for a healthcare campus than an on-site, full-hospital replacement. The impacts of demolition, new construction and departmental moves on operations and the patient/visitor experience requires an intense decision-making rigor. This rigor, and the institutional prioritization it inspires, can impact other new construction projects in the system. This presentation therefore illustrates how HDR’s master planning and design for Utah Valley Hospital Replacement positively influenced the firm’s work on six other new-construction projects on five Intermountain campuses across the state of Utah.

We will trace the design opportunities and challenges over a wide geographic area, and across the full spectrum of acuities and scales—from the small, stand-alone, suburban clinic to multi-block, high-rise acute care. The presentation will focus on Intermountain’s system-wide perspective of two key initiatives: branding their identity in terms of the patient experience, and developing new standards for patient units, interventional platforms and team-based clinical modules. The result is a multi-faceted portrait of one of the fastest-growing healthcare providers in the west.

Eric Meub, AIA – Design Principal & Vice President, HDR

Eric is an award winning, high-concept and high-energy thought leader, design leader and practice leader with a passion for the evolving missions of healthcare. He offers a background of almost forty years of architectural experience, most of which has been dedicated to master planning, medical planning and design of large, complex healthcare and academic projects. He has led design and/or master planning for such world renowned academic medical centers as Stanford University, UCSF and MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Heather Crespy, CID, IIDA – Senior Interior Designer & Associate, HDR

Heather is a driven, solution-oriented, and critically thinking interior designer with a passion for cross-disciplinary collaboration and innovative design resolution. Over the last 11 years she has worked in a number of different market sectors including healthcare, higher education, bio-medical education, civic, government, and science and technology. Her client list includes Huntington Hospital, Cedars Sinai, UCSD Health System, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Sick Kid’s Children’s Hospital.
