To further the profession, the AIA requires its members to complete 18 Continuing Education Services Learning Units (CES LUs) per year. Of these, at least 12 hours must qualify as Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW).
AIA|LA, community partners, and AIA|LA Committees organize conferences, seminars, presentations, and tours that offer over 120 CES LUs a year.
Looking for courses to fulfill CES requirements?
Search our Events Calendar for “Learning Units” to see what we have coming up.
Need to check on your CES transcripts?
Visit aia.org and “Login” with your AIA member credentials to view your completed courses and unit count.
ADA Seminars
AIA California offers online courses through AECKnowledge to satisfy the ADA requirement for licensure in California. AIA|LA also partners experts to lead 5-hour seminars that provide attendees with the mandatory continuing education requirements for CA license renewal.
How many CES LUs do I need each year?
Architect members are required to complete a minimum of 18 total Learning Units, 12 of which must fall under the Health Safety Welfare (HSW) category. Associate and Allied members are encouraged to complete LU courses, but it is not required. Emeritus members must complete 1 LU.
Who reports my credits?
AIA members receive the benefit of having the Chapter report all LU credits for AIA|LA events. Non-members may request certificates of completion, which you can submit to state licensing boards or assocations that have their own CE requirements.
I don’t see credit reflected for a CES event I attended – what do I do?
AIA members can check their CES transcripts by visiting aia.org and clicking “Login” in the upper righthand corner. If you do not see credit for an event you have attended within 30 days of the event, please contact the Chapter office to confirm.
I attended a non-AIA event and want to report credit. How do I self-report?
Self-reporting LUs should be reserved only for events that you attended that were not administered by an AIA chapter or an AIA-approved CES Provider. Please note that you cannot self report credits for an event that is already an AIA-certified LU event.
AIA members can self-report LUs by visiting aia.org and clicking “Login”. Option to self-report will be offered under the Continuing Education portion of your profile.
- Members who participate in only part of a program cannot claim any credit for the program.
- If you repeat a course, no additional credit will be granted or recorded.
- No partial credit will be offered for CES-approved courses, unless the course is pre-approved to contain multiple, stand-alone sessions.
- LU credits above the required 18 will roll over to the following year ONLY IF there is a deficiency in credits that year.
