HOW ARCHITECTS CAN SUPPORT MEDICAL PROVIDERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS

Through this page we’re connecting members and the broader A/E/C field with ways in which they may contribute needed supplies for others as the region and world takes on COVID-19. If you have the resources and time, we encourage you to help.

SUPPORT LA MEDICAL PERSONNEL

04.05.20
Los Angeles Needs its Design Community
Participate in the Mayor’s Expansion of Alvin Huang’s PPE 3D Printing Program

The Mayor’s program will connect hospitals, and other front line caregivers, with PPEs printed by the architectural community and expand the program the production of ventilator parts.

(We understand that many of you are already printing PPEs through Alvin’s program. The scaling-up will begin once the hospitals currently requesting PPEs from Alvin are served. It will also expand to include ventilators.)

The first step is to survey AIA members and colleagues in the design community so that the Mayor may evaluate production capacity.

Given the urgency, we ask that you respond immediately.

USC School of Architecture is working with with USC Viterbi Engineering, USC Keck Medicine, and USC Iovine Young Academy on this project. Once a face shield has been approved, the group will also manufacture shields.

To participate: sign up by providing information on this Google sheet.
Alvin Huang, Director of Graduate & Post-Professional Architecture, USC School of Architecture, will follow up with printing files and connect you to the working group through Slack which is being used to coordinate, share tips and advice.

HAND-SEW MASKS

Jayna Zweiman, who was trained as an architect, launched the “Pussyhat Project” and spoke at the WiA’s Powerful conference a couple of years ago, has launched a website that connects people who need handmade face masks with people who make them.

The site is all inclusive, intending to fulfill requests from first responders to custodial staffs and grocery story clerks. To work with the group, click here to connect with those who need handmade masks.
