Activation from the Clinical Perspective: Los Angeles Surge Hospital (LASH)

Learning Units: 1 LU/HSW

This is a virtual event.  Meeting information will be email directly to registrants.

On April 13, the Los Angeles Surge Hospital or “LASH” (formerly St. Vincent’s Medical Center) opened its ICU, creating referral inpatient capacity to treat the expected increase of COVID-19 patients in Los Angeles County. Common Spirit Health and Kaiser Permanente collaborated with the State of California and the County of Los Angeles to activate the facility, which will have a 266-bed capacity when fully operational. Instrumental to LASH’s fast-track activation was Hallsta, who will share how they planned clinical spaces and reconfigured ventilation systems and procured critical equipment to transform the previously shuttered acute care hospital to COVID-19 surge care in just 14 days!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1) Based on anticipated COVID-19 surge demand, determine optimum unit mix, i.e. modify/isolate existing licensed areas or activate unoccupied areas

2) Define how COVID-19 patient status and transmission-based precautions inform clinical isolation requirements

3) Differentiate between negative and positive pressure rooms and implement the required mechanical equipment and systems to achieve isolation objectives

4) Implement isolation capacity, mechanical equipment, systems modifications, and staffing flow to rapidly convert existing licensed space or unoccupied areas into COVID-19 surge care
