AIA|LA presents…
Designing the Future: A Seven-Part Series

A series of virtual panel discussions
In light of lessons learned from our ongoing pandemic crisis, this series of panel discussions will explore how architects & designers can quickly adapt to the market demands and societal shifts that will occur as we adjust to living, working, and staying healthy in our built environment. The objective of this series will be to learn new ideas, innovations, and best-practices that will serve as a value-add to the architecture profession to help make our built and natural environments healthier, more equitable, and resilient.

Prospective Questions:

  • What are the social equity impacts we need to be mindful as we respond to the pandemic, physical distancing, and more “hybrid” online learning programs?
  • How do you ensure our schools are safe for re-entry? (best-practices)
  • How do you differentiate between the short term reactionary efforts and substantial, long-term design implications?
  • With some many embarking on the world’s largest online learning pilot program – how do we implement these findings?
  • How will all of this impact the space needs assessment for clients?
  • What are the opportunities for more multi-use facilities and how will compatibility of uses be mitigated?

Discussion topics will include:

+ Substantial changes, both in design and in the way schools function day-to-day, that must be made for students to practice physical distancing, as well as, best-practices for hybrid class schedules that involve a mix of classroom and online learning.

+ The policies and protocols needed to protect students, faculty and staff, as they relate to instruction, transportation, screening, recreation, meals, and general sanitation.

+ The provisions to ensure that ventilation systems and fans operate properly and increase circulation of outdoor air as much as possible by opening windows and doors and other methods. Central air filtration will need to be optimized for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and steps must be taken to ensure that all water systems and features are safe to use after a prolonged facility shutdown.
