August 19, 2020 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm PDT

AIA|LA & So Cal NOMA present…

a JEDI Committee program

Prop 16 (The repeal of Prop 209) and the Impacts on Black Owned Architecture Firms, Yesterday, Today, and Moving Forward

REGISTER HERE.

Prior to the passing of Prop 209 in 1996, that eliminated the use of race, gender, ethnicity, and country of origin in the selection process for public contracting, Black and underrepresented architecture firms had been flourishing in Southern California. Many firms had benefited from public sector contracts dating back to the days of Mayor Tom Bradley. After 1996, the quantity and size of the remaining firms began to diminish. This panel explores the historical context that existed pre-Prop 209, what changes fell upon architecture firms owned by Black and underrepresented people of color after Prop 209 was passed and what the future may look like upon the repeal of Prop 209 via Prop 16 that is on the California state ballots in November. The panel will include discussions on the procurement process, alternate forms of firm business models to sustain growth, and the importance of self-reliance to keep Black owned firms viable through any condition. Join SoCalNOMA and AIA LA as we present insights from architects Roland Wiley (RAW International), Michael Anderson (Anderson Barker), and recent AIA LA Robert Kennard award winner for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity, R. Steven Lewis (ZGF). Panel Moderated by SoCalNOMA President, Lance Collins.
