Cal Poly Pomona’s Healthcare and Environmental Architecture Leadership (HEAL) program prepares next generation architects to meet the challenges of advanced technology and construction sustainability in healthcare. Hofu Wu, Arch.D, FAIA, HFAIT, LEED-AP, Professor of Architecture and Cal Poly Pomona’s Director of the Environmental Design Technology Unit, taught the Fall 2020 Healthcare Studio, which assigned these two projects to graduate and undergraduate students:

a. Palm Valley Medical Center (Adaptive Reuse of a cinema center) in Goodyear, Arizona

b. The BeWell Hub OC in Great Park, Irvine, CA

The USC School of Architecture continued its third year with a formal presence of Health Care design problems in its graduate studio. This program combines the rapidly changing world of healthcare medicine, housing design for the frail//vulnerable, and the complications created from COVID-19. It consists of 1) 5 small group clusters of skilled nursing units (10 rooms each); 2) 40 units of affordable housing for age 55+; 3) a compact but comprehensive neighborhood outpatient clinic and exercise facility. The total gross building area is 132,345. It uses landscape considerations to connect to the community at large. The site is approximately 3.0 acres and is located east of the intersection of 41st and South Compton Avenue.

PRESENTERS:

Four short presentations from the two universities will be made in two separate Zoom breakout discussions, with an interactive rotating audience format:
