CES Learning Units: 1 LU/HSW

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) are becoming an important form of housing in California but designing and building these units to comply with the 2019 Energy Code can be challenging. This course covers the prescriptive requirements that apply to new ADUs and discusses both minimum requirements and design options for compliance.

Presenters:

Gina Rodda – Owner, Gabel Associates, LLC
Gina Rodda is currently the Owner of Gabel Associates, LLC out of Berkeley, California, and has been in the energy modeling field since 1991. Gina is the instructor of several dozen full day Energy Code Ace trainings on the Residential and Nonresidential Title 24 Building Energy Efficiency Standards for building department staff, energy consultants, engineers, and architects. She is also a Title 24 energy analyst performing a wide range of responsibilities in both residential and non-residential construction pertaining to compliance standards and energy modeling, and is a respected subject matter expert informing the statewide code development process.

Nick Brown – Certified Energy Analyst
Nick Brown is a Certified Energy Analyst and expert in energy modeling and energy efficient building, with 20 years’ experience in the homebuilding industry. He is a subject matter expert on the statewide Energy Code Ace team that is responsible for energy code education, and he teaches classes for Southern California Edison on Net Zero Design, Clean Energy Homes, and Energy Code for Residential Architects. Nick spent 15 years as president of a building materials manufacturer prior to founding Build Smart, an independent energy consultancy. Nick has remodeled his own house to be net zero energy in a deep energy retrofit in 2014.

Learning Objectives:
+ Determine if an ADU is considered an addition or a new residential building
+ Consider envelope options for ADU additions and new ADU’s
+ Describe the renewable energy requirements for ADU additions and new ADU’s (PV / Battery)
+ Identify the HVAC/Domestic hot water (DHW) equipment and HERS verification measures options that provide ADU design flexibility and how utility source (natural gas versus all-electric) impacts those choices
