CONTEXT – L.A. Then and Now : Spaces for Women
In 1926, the YWCA opened the largest commercial building funded by women, for women, Hotel Figueroa. It served as a safe haven for solo female travelers, who were prohibited from checking into most hotels without a male chaperone.
Within the ever-changing landscape of women’s empowerment, can “space” be a form of activism? We take a look at the physical and psychological spaces, past and present, that have been created for women in the context of LA.
