AIA|LA Design For Dignity Roundtable:
The Housing Element Update: The Foundation for a Sustainable, Equitable, and Just Future

REGISTER HERE. (Free w/ advance RSVP)

As a follow-up to our 5th annual “Design for Dignity” conference, we’re organizing a series of roundtables to further advance the various initiates introduced during our break-out discussions.

This roundtable will serve as a forum to further explore the topic outlined below and identify pro-active next-steps to implement ideas on how we can best address our housing crisis.

The Housing Element Update: The Foundation for a Sustainable, Equitable, and Just Future

California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) determines the share of the state’s housing need for each region based off population projections prepared by the California Department of Finance and other factors identified in recent housing legislation, this share (regional housing needs allocation) is allocated to each local jurisdiction by a council of government (Southern California Association of Governments). As cities across California begin the update process for the 2021-2029 housing element (the 6th cycle!), join us for an event that will discuss in more detail what the housing element is and what it does. This event will also cover what new changes accompany the 6th cycle update and how we can utilize those changes to advocate for more sustainable, equitable, and just cities in Southern California.

+ What makes this housing element update process different from the previous five?
+ Can we utilize the housing element to end single-family zoning?
+ What role can architects and designers play in advocating for how we shape our future built environment?
+ What does it mean to affirmatively furthering fair housing look like in the context of the housing element update?
