Prominently located on Westwood Plaza, Engineering VI presents a new face for the School of Engineering and provides a range of sophisticated research environments and gathering spaces. The design responds to the complex and constrained site at a variety of scales while redeveloping two important campus pedestrian connectors and upgrading significant campus infrastructure.  The building was accomplished with a “Two-Phase – One-Building” strategy that provided flexibility for project funding and evolving research priorities.

Research Environments – The contrasting research requirements of the two phases, wet lab research in Phase 1 and computation research in Phase 2, required specific architectural and engineering solutions that carefully address the research needs with energy efficient building technologies that leverage the natural environment. Both research environments provide flexible research laboratories in comfortable and collaborative research environments.

Sustainability – Iterative parametric modeling of the building planning and envelope design involved the entire consultant team and balanced energy efficiency, materials, aesthetic goals and cost. Design strategies include program stacking for efficient mechanical service zoning, natural ventilation, Aircuity laboratory monitoring, renewable energy generation and extensive day-lighting techniques.  Phase 1 achieved LEED Gold certification and Phase 2 is on-target for LEED Platinum.

Will Longyear, AIA – Associate Principal, Moore Ruble Yudell Architects

Will Longyear is an associate principal with Moore Ruble Yudell Architects.  During his 30 year career, he has designed and managed a range of higher-education projects across North America and China.  With a particular emphasis in the sciences, he has designed research and clinical facilities for the University of Washington, UC San Diego, University of Arizona, University of Southern California, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Shanghai Tech University and UCLA. Will received his Bachelors of Architecture from University of Southern California followed by post-graduate study at the Architectural Association in England.

Michael Martin, AIA – Director of Higher Education Design, Gensler

Michael Martin was formerly a principal at Moore Ruble Yudell and is now with Gensler. His work has focused on large-scale, multi-building academic and commercial architectural projects, as well as, master planning and urban design.  His leadership has successfully guided a new town development in the Cayman Islands, an academic complex in Hong Kong and the planning and architectural design of a new university campus in Shanghai, China.  The work overseas complements numerous architectural and master planning projects undertaken throughout the United States. Michael received his Bachelors of Architecture from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign followed by a Masters of Architecture from UCLA.
