USC Health Care Graduate Studio Presentation

During 2018, the USC School of Architecture began to explore a more formal presence for Health Care design problems in its graduate studio program. In Fall, 2018, a 2-unit seminar (ARCH 522 Health Care Design) was created to provide a broad-based introduction to the topic. The course was offered in conjunction with a 6-unit Graduate Design Studio (ARCH 705) to create an in-depth offering. The courses were designed to inform one another and the seminar was opened to the studio students as well as other architecture students and students from other disciplines. The seminar attracted a total of 22 students (11 of which were from the studio class). This reception will highlight the work of the USC School of Architecture Graduate Students.

The studio topic was a 100,000 SF outpatient rehabilitation center on a 6-acre site at the east edge of Barnsdall Park where a 50-year-old shopping center is currently located. Students were challenged to create a building with 6 clinics, an exercise facility, a healing garden and an education center. They were also expected to connect the building with the park (on the east), Vermont Avenue (on the west) and to a new grove of olive trees (following the 1994 Barnsdall Park master plan) to the north.
