Design for Dignity 2021 Program

D4D update: to make Design for Dignity more accessible, the AIALA has introduced a new ticket structure: purchase two tickets and receive two comps for colleagues, clients, staff members.
Our 6th annual Design For Dignity conference will highlight best-practices and highlight the work of architects, contractors, housing developers, clients, funders, and service providers delivering housing and supportive services to peoples and communities throughout the region.
This year’s conference includes a new element: a series of 10-minute ‘deep dives’ (20 individual short talks in all) that showcase built projects and successfully implemented programs (and coalitions), from which we can learn more about what’s working well and identify specific areas where we need to improve processes, procedures, and outcomes.
The support of abode communities | architecture and Egan | Simon Architecture makes this conference possible. Thank you.
We hear stories all of the time about how difficult it is to build housing in the Los Angeles region. Public policy, the entitlements process, and design engagement that is forced to reinvent the wheel each time are part of this unwieldy equation. We see the results around us. Refugee encampments are now more prevalent than ever. Misery and suffering are now more visible on every street corner — serving as a constant reminder that our overarching housing system is broken and we need to embrace the depth and complexity of this crisis with urgency, compassion, and highly effective solutions.
Let’s speak openly and honestly about the true costs of providing dignity for our houseless friends, neighborhoods and families, or of not doing so.
Once we can paint a clearer picture of where we are, we can better navigate the complexity of competing needs and priorities, and pave a smoother, faster, more efficient and less costly road to success.
