AIA|LA CITY LEADERS BREAKFAST RECEPTIONS

Top Take-Aways and Next Steps from our most recent breakfast receptions:

Dr. Va Lecia Adams Kellum – CEO, Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) = May 30 (8am)

Next steps:

1. To create a “Venn diagram” (or visual/ schematic map) of the ‘systemic redundancies’ in the 120+/- days before Certificate of Occupancy (development service snags) and the 120+/- days after CofO for resident occupancy (housing choice vouchers, time-limited subsidy programs, etc.)

2. To create an institutionalized ’task force’ to map out “future scenarios” that will explore/ embrace the goals of ‘functional zero’ — recognizing that we need permanent, beautiful, and well-integrated social and physical infrastructure to ensure harm reduction and enhance/ dignify quality of life for ALL, especially for those who have been afflicted by the stresses of systemic inequities, etc.

I’ll follow up with everyone in attendance to see who is willing to personally help advance these prospective ’next steps’ and I’ll organize our collective effort.

Alberto M. Carvalho – Superintendent, Los Angeles Unified School District  =  May 31 (8am)

Next Steps: How the AIA|LA can help support LAUSD =

1. To empower political and civic support for the next capital campaign and infrastructure bond program.
2. For architecture & design firms to provide more internships to LAUSD students and mentorship opportunities to connect youth to career opportunities in the AEC industry.
3. For technical insight and design leadership (innovation) to achieve more cost-effective and healthier learning environments. Including legislative fixes and regulatory reforms, etc.

Supt. Carvalho also recommended that we gain inspiration from Miami’s iPrep Academy =
